How to Grow Celery

About: Celery grows really well in Ireland as it needs moist soil for its high water content. It likes cooler temperatures and needs a long growing season. Celery is perfect for a healthy diet - full of nutrients for shining hair and glowing skin, but practically no calories.

Sow

  • For best results, get started early by sowing under cover in March in seed trays. Scatter the seeds over moist soil surface as celery needs light to germinate.

  • It can take 2-3 weeks to germinate. Harden off before planting out.

Care

  • Transplant seedlings into final growing position after all danger of frost has passed in May (or when they have 4-5 true leaves/10cm tall) with 30 cm between plants in rows 30 cm apart. Choose a moist site with fertile soil, which will be shaded from full summer heat.

  • Keep moist at all times by watering regularly. Applying a mulch will help to conserve water.

  • Feed regularly and protect from slugs.

Harvest

  • Harvest the entire plant by gently lifting from the ground.

  • Best used fresh, but you can store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
