About

Turnips are so easy and quick to grow, you’ll have them on your dinner plate in no time!

Sow

  • Choose a site or pot with moist but well-drained soil, sheltered with partial shade. Make sure not to plant them where other brassicas (e.g. cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, turnips, kale, kohlrabi) have grown in the last 3-4 years to avoid disease.

  • You can sow under cover from February, or wait until after frosts in April. Sow in a module tray and transplant outside when risk of frost has gone.

  • Transplant them at least 10-15 cm apart, or transplant them 25 cm apart to provide a bigger crop, in rows 50cm apart.

Care

  • Keep moist during dry weather, otherwise they will become woody.

  • Mulch around them to retain moisture and to minimize weeds.

Harvest

  • You can harvest them once they reach 7-10 cm in diameter, which can be as soon as 5 -8 weeks after sowing.

  • For later sowings, lift before hard frosts – they can tolerate light frosts, which will make them taste sweeter!

  • Store in a cold dark place for up to 4 months
