Sow: April-May

Plant: June-July

Harvest: August-September

 About:

Sunflowers are packed with nutrients – follow the instructions below or eat the entire seedling as a ‘microgreen’. Great to grow with children, they will brighten up any garden!

Sow

  • Choose a site or pot with moist but well-drained soil, in full sun.

  • Sow sunflower seeds from April to May, individually in 10cm pots of peat-free, multi-purpose compost. Plant out into the garden 45cm apart when all risk of frost has passed, from early June.

  • Or grow inside any time of year to seedling (microgreen) size in a sunny windowsill, chop and eat!

Care

  • Mulch if possible to keep moist and weed free. Keep an eye out for pests, weeds & disease & use natural methods to treat or prevent.

  • Protect new seedlings from slugs and snails.

  • You may need to stake the plant as it grows, especially in windy areas!

Harvest

  • The flower should appear in August. Harvest when you see the seeds fully developed within the flower head.

  • Wash microgreens before eating and store in fridge.

  • Seeds should be dried and then store in a cool dark place.

  • Crack the shell and eat raw or add to salads, stir-fries, breads and any dish you can think of!
